The race between incumbent Republican Congressman Nick LaLota and Democratic challenger John Avlon for New York’s 1st Congressional District in Eastern Long Island continues to be among the nation’s most closely watched contests.

LaLota has a background in both politics and public service, having served as Chief of Staff to the Suffolk County Legislature and as a Commissioner of the Suffolk County Board of Elections. He is a U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. His campaign focuses on fiscal conservatism, public safety, and support for law enforcement. In Congress, he has been involved in addressing local issues, particularly in relation to coastal community concerns and environmental sustainability.

Avlon is a journalist, political commentator, and author known for his work as a Senior Political Analyst and anchor at CNN. Previously, he was the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of The Daily Beast. Avlon started his career in media after serving as Chief Speechwriter for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He is widely regarded for his centrist political commentary and his efforts to promote bipartisan dialogue. Avlon’s books include Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America and Washington’s Farewell: The Founding Father’s Warning to Future Generations.

New York’s 1st Congressional District covers the eastern part of Suffolk County, which includes the Hamptons, Montauk, and other towns such as Riverhead, Patchogue, and Smithtown. The area has a diverse mix of affluent communities, middle-class suburban neighborhoods, and more rural sections. Its economy is driven by tourism, fishing, agriculture, and a growing wine industry. Coastal management and environmental protection are key concerns for the district, which has been politically competitive, switching between Republican and Democratic representatives over the years. Issues like infrastructure, affordability, and preserving the character of local communities are prominent in local politics.

Despite a slight Republican advantage after recent redistricting, Avlon is building a broad coalition to challenge LaLota, who is seeking his second term. The Cook Political Report rates the district as “Likely Republican,” and an internal GOP poll shows LaLota with a modest 50%-42% lead.

LaLota’s campaign has emphasized his work on bipartisan initiatives, pointing to his role in securing federal funds for Suffolk County and his active membership in the Problem Solvers Caucus. His platform centers on tackling high prices and border security, presenting himself as a collaborative leader capable of crossing party lines.

In contrast, Avlon is appealing to moderate voters by positioning himself as a centrist alternative and criticizing LaLota as too partisan on issues like climate change and reproductive rights. Avlon’s recent addition to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue Program has brought new resources to his campaign, boosting his visibility and competitiveness. He is focusing on local engagement, pledging to hold more in-person town halls, while LaLota argues his legislative experience and community ties make him the best candidate for the district.
